Among the sunshine, clear sky, green grass and calm breeze, passers-by could pick out the Siena community helping to keep their campus clean throughout the day on Tuesday, April 20. The fourth annual Campus Clean-Up Day takes care of Siena’s beautiful grounds and brings people from all areas of Siena together.
The event, organized by Director of Risk Analysis and Project Management Sandy Serbalik and co-chaired by Alex Evanciew ’10 and Allie Collins ’11, kicked off the many activities that are scheduled to take place during the year’s Earth Week.
Participants came from all areas of the college and included Paul Stec ’79, vice president for finance and administration, Fr. Ken Paulli ‘82, chief of staff, Athletics staff, Residence Life staff, the women’s softball and soccer teams, the water polo team, the Environmental Club and members of the Student Senate.
Although the community spent the day raking leaves and cleaning the campus, according to Evanciew, it’s more than that. “It’s about everyone coming together for a good cause,” he said.
It’s also a way for Siena to live its Franciscan tradition of respecting the environment, as well as bringing people together to serve. “We need to understand that we are a part of something larger than themselves. Events like these help people to connect and go beyond their boundaries so that they notice there’s a bigger world here,” said Paulli.
