The idea for the current Siena College Women’s Rugby Football Club began during the 2002-2003 academic year by members of the men’s team. A meeting was held in Siena Hall in the Spring 2003 semester for all women interested in learning more about the prospective club.

The women’s team began as an offshoot of the men’s team and the two existed under a shared constitution and budget; the women’s team essentially did not become its own club for another year, but rather shared the club title of Siena College Rugby Football Club with that of the preexisting men’s team. The Siena College Student Senate approved the new constitution in October 2003.

At about the same time that the club was being formed in mid 2003, the women’s club contacted JC Whipple, the executive director of NYS Rugby, to inquire about becoming a member of a sanctioned New York state rugby conference. The admittance process required a yearlong commitment during which the team was considered an “associate member” of the league, as well as attendance and participation in the NYS Rugby “Upstates” Tournament at Seneca Lake State Park in Geneva, New York. Finally, at the end of the Spring 2004 semester, SCWRFC was accepted into the New York State Rugby Conference’s East Division III league.

A year after the initial women’s club conception, at a meeting early in the Spring 2004 semester, the women and men voted to separate the two teams. This led to the formation of the club as it continues today – a separate group recognized by Siena College as an independent club sport.

The SCWRFC went to the playsoffs and played St. Bonaventure. The SCWRFC won with a score of 17-5. The next weekend the women's team hosted Hamilton for the State Championship. The game was a major success with Siena coming out on top with a score of 38-0. SCWRFC moved up to Div II and continues to play as a successful competitor in Div II of the NYS Rugby Conference.
