Workshop for Recruitment and Retention of Diverse Faculty and Staff

Faculty, staff and student diversity continues to be one of the most challenging issues in the Academy to date. However, search committees and hiring managers often lack the necessary information and understanding in generating a quality, robust, applicant pool. This is even more foreign when reaching out to targeted populations of women and people of color. It is therefore imperative that faculty search committees and hiring managers receive hands on support in realizing this outcome by going beyond the passive approach of placing an ad in the Chronicle of Higher Education, discipline and professional- specific trade journals. A proactive stance and forward thinking approach in recruitment and retention must be undertaken.

Separate workshops were offered for staff/administrators and faculty, respectively. They were facilitated by Renee Baker, whose efforts have placed her university as a national model in addressing these areas of concern in the hiring and retention process. She shared lessons learned on her journey to “Mission Possible” by providing some necessary strategies, resources, tips and tools to assist in being successful in this endeavor.

Ms. Baker holds a Bachelor of Science in Psychology and Master of Arts in Counseling from State University of New York at Brockport and a Master of Arts in Public Administration from the Maxwell School of Citizenship & Public Affairs at Syracuse University. She received a certificate from Harvard Graduate School of Education in 2010 for participation in the Management Development Program.

 Safe Zone Training

The Safe Zone Program is a nationally recognized program that informs students, staff, administrators and faculty on gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) issues as well as develop skills to build an inclusive and safe community for those who identify as LGBT.
Diane Goodman is a consultant, professor, speaker, author, and activist who has worked with a wide range of organizations, community groups, schools, and universities on diversity and social justice issues. Tanya Williams is Coordinator of Multicultural Affairs at Mount Holyoke College, where she is also a training facilitator with the Intergroup Dialogue Project. Using a participatory approach, they help people increase their awareness, knowledge and skills to foster equity and inclusion.
