Siena Mentoring Program

Siena College Mentoring Program

The Siena College Mentoring Program was founded as a Big Brothers/Big Sisters initiative in 1965 and since then the program has evolved into an integral part of the Siena College Franciscan Center for Service and Advocacy, touching the lives of many Siena students and local children every year.

This program matches current Siena students with needy local children the two are given the opportunity to get to know and learn from one another. The children, also known as ‘littles’, are picked up from throughout the city of Albany and ride in two school buses to Siena where they meet up with their ‘bigs’. The pairs spend almost every Saturday afternoon during the academic year together with meals provided for both ‘bigs’ and ‘littles’ in the Siena dining hall and then participating in a variety of activities including apple picking, bowling, going to the movies, roller skating, snow tubing, ice skating and having picnics. This is a fun and engaging chance for Siena students to share in the life of a child, and students are encouraged to get involved.

High School Program

The High School Program serves youth who are currently attending high school and who have been in the Mentoring Program since early elementary school. This gives the high school students the opportunity to continue to have a relationship with Siena College students and participate in activities every Saturday.

Summer Enrichment Program

The Summer Enrichment Program is a six week summer camp that serves about 65 children every year from the local community. The program runs on weekdays from 8:30 AM-4:00 PM and is free for all participants. All of the counselors are Siena College students and the program includes an academic component, recreational opportunities and field trips to such places as the Saratoga Dance Museum, Fort William Henry, the Saratoga Car Museum, the Greenwich Zoo and Grafton State Park.
